“Yet you, Lord, are our Father. We are the clay, you are the potter;

we are all the work of your hand.”

– Isaiah 64:8 (NIV)

Daily Meditation: Isaiah 64, Romans 9:6-29

Remember the sculpture you made out of clay in elementary school—or helped your children make? Our son Zach made me a ring holder. It’s pretty rough looking, but it is a keepsake I still treasure simply because my boy made it for me.

When it comes to God, the words of Isaiah are so true: “We are the clay, you are the potter.” God is at work in your life and my life, smoothing out our rough edges and shaping our core being. Sometimes the process is painful. It hurts to have our rough edges sanded down and be stretched and molded in ways that are new and unfamiliar. But the end result will be far better if we allow God to have free reign in our lives instead of fighting him every step of the way. I am reminded of the old hymn, “mold me and make me, after Thy will.”

This short life is our chance to be something amazing for him and to let him craft us into whatever brings him glory. I say our attitude should be one that boldly submits to the sculptor and declares, “Since you are going to make it, make it good! Don’t hold back. I am the work of your hand.”

We are clay in the hands of the Master, a master who only has the ability to make beautiful things. The sculpting process may be painful, but the end result will be more wonderful than we can imagine!

“We are so busy working on God, we forget He is trying to work on us.

That is what this life is all about: God at work on us, trying to remake us into vessels of glory.”

– David Wilkerson

Be fearless: Nobody said the squishing, pounding, and folding would be fun or easy, but it’s the end result that is most appealing. Amazing things happen when we stop trying to mold ourselves, and we let the creative Creator take control.
